In Ikebukuro-Honcho, Tokyo, vacant lots left by a delayed road project have remained unused for decades. Once part of a vibrant wooden neighborhood, these fenced-off spaces now symbolize the loss of memory and place.
This project reimagines such voids as “seedbeds” for urban regeneration. Through fieldwork, I gathered “seeds of memory”—architectural fragments, spatial traces, and stories from local residents. These seeds are planted into five types of transitional spaces: vacant land, leftover plots, setback areas, demolition sites, and fringe properties.
As the seeds grow and cross-pollinate, new hybrid spaces emerge: a vertical park, a local alley of shops, a cultural greengrocer, and a community library. These places remain even after the road is built, embedding memory into the future urban form.
