在貧脊的土地上常可以看見鮮紅色的標的,這是澎湖每個村落都有的五營,它是符號,是一個被扭曲,其意義只存於其名的傳說故事。五營暗示聚落受到保護的結界,現況多是鮮紅色底座,上方安置石符。五營源自古代祭社,先民以石頭祭拜五土之神。五土,暗示著五個季節,也承載五行的意義。然而這個原初的意義在移民的過程中被符號化,成為王爺信仰下的附屬,這個矛盾為設計埋下關鍵的伏筆。
五行暗示物質的對立性質,舉例來說,水是柔軟的,但反面的水可能是一把刀。火是一種毀滅,但反面的火可能是另一生命的開始。
在聚落南方,大片的銀合歡林在下雨後,葉片上會滯留大量的雨水,再慢慢滴下。在這有潛在缺水危機的地方,這樣的水顯得珍貴,也足以形成新地景的開端。
鐫刻大地是一場借力使力的聚落更新。我以五行的對立性質,重新詮釋被符號化的五營,以相生、相剋關係梳理聚落中的場域(銀合歡林、墓地、龍脈、海岸),成為新的整體。新的五營有生活的開始,有信仰,也有生命的結束。由村民合力完成,可能隨著時間需要進行新一輪的修復。村民不一定會在意五行背後的意義,但新的五營打破符號,成為務實的地景。

On this arduous island, bright red signs, Wu(five)ying, are often seen in the field. Wuying exists in every village in Penghu. It is a symbol, a twisted legend whose meaning exists only in its name, which suggests the protected area of the village. It originates from ancient worship of nature, bearing the Five Element Theory. However, the nature-related origin was symbolized during the process of immigration, becoming a subsidiary of Taoism. This contradiction leaves a foreshadowing for the design.
The five elements allude to contradicting natures of matter. For instance, water is soft and infiltrating, but it might also be like a knife. In the south, a large amount of rainwater will remain on the leaves of White Popinac. Such water can trigger a new cycle in the place which is prone to drought. Landscape of Scarcity is a renewal of a village. I reinterpret the symbolized Wuying, and renew places in the village with contradicting natures of matter, and it becomes a new whole. The new Wuying contains the beginning of life, faith, and the end of life. It is completed by the villagers together, and may need renovation over time. Villagers don’t necessarily know the meaning behind it, but the new Wuying is no longer a symbol and instead becomes “landschaft”.
