Shimabara City in Nagasaki Prefecture suffered devastating damage from the eruption of Mount Unzen-Fugen, and the lava dome “Heisei Shinzan” remains unstable today. The Mizunashigawa River Sediment Control Levee, built in preparation for future disasters, now divides the district. Rather than simply raising levees, could the land itself be shaped to receive and absorb sediment across the entire region? By applying cut and fill techniques to existing farmland, we envision a future for the Annaka area that faces disasters head-on. This is a vision of a landscape that does not treat the collapse of Heisei Shinzan as disaster, but embraces it as part of the land.
