Shifting Soil and Spirit — A Landscape of Rumors
At the Houpu River between Sanpu and Beiliao in Yujing, Tainan, traditional narratives of natural disasters—once passed down as folklore—are now reinterpreted through scientific language. This project bridges the two by adopting the ritual path of Mazu processions, selecting nodal points along the river to create spatial interventions where disaster prevention coexists with everyday life.
Scientific infrastructure is reintegrated into the landscape to form new spiritual grounds—spaces that resonate with local rhythms while proposing future uses for the eroded soil and terrain.
Faith becomes a spectrum—where myth and engineering coexist.
Oral legends and scientific methods are not opposites but part of the same continuum—both serve to explain nature. Whether it’s the “Blue Serpent,” the moat, Da Shigong, reclaimed land, or dredging projects, the language of belief accommodates both symbolic prophecy and precise control. It is not the dichotomy that matters, but the way users and designers narrate this dynamic landscape. Faith, in this context, is a conscious way of understanding.
Faith as a spiritual immune system.
From the Tianhou Temple, across calcified white clay paths, to the incense burner rest stop of Da Shigong, and onward to riverside kilns and community gathering spaces—faith is expressed as an enduring spatial practice. Through rituals and seasonal events, everyday objects and spaces are transformed, sustaining rural labor traditions and honoring the long-standing reverence for nature.
