地方感是我們自我意識、記憶、過往經驗和日常習慣投射到一個物理空間上的一種表現。聲音，在空間內回盪，仿如一個心理的開關，喚起記憶，喚醒感之地。那些被視為噪音、瑕疵、缺陷，那些被忽略的、被消聲的——卻擁有一種觸發地方感的力量。面對阿多諾・泰奧多爾 (Adorno Theodor) 的「聽眾退化」理論的緊迫性，個體在這個信息時代變得聽覺失靈且不堪重負，現今是我們的一個關鍵時刻，重新思考聲音的價值以及建築業界將環境聲音視之為噪音問題的傳統設計手法。

Our sense of place is a projection of our self-awareness, memories, past experiences and routines onto a physical space. Sound plays a crucial role in triggering our perception of spaces, acting as a mental switch. What we often perceive as noise, as a flaw, as a defect—what we actively isolate and unconsciously ignore—has a power to trigger a sense of places. Grappling with the urgency of Adorno Theodor’s theory of “listener regression”, a phenomenon where individuals are becoming acoustically deaf and overwhelmed in this information age, the present is a critical moment to rethink the value of sound and the conventional problem-solution design protocol when treating sound in our built environment.

你曾經坐過日本的地鐵嗎？人們幾乎不說話。車廂是死一般的寂靜。我僵住了，不敢動一步，因為擔心我的動作會造成噪音，給非常有禮貌和善良的日本人帶來困擾。日本的寂靜在我的腦海中制造噪音，讓我感到焦慮。香港的噪音讓我感到平靜。聲音是否能創造一個安全的空間？我們是否都無意識地將我們的經驗與一系列特定的聲音聯繫起來？這種聯繫是否會自動引起一種地方感，而我們卻沒有注意到？

Dear Diary,

Have you ever taken the subway in Japan? People barely speak. The car is silent—dead silent. I froze, afraid to move, worried that even the smallest sound I made would disturb the extremely polite and kind Japanese passengers. The silence of Japan created noise in my head—it made me anxious. In contrast, the noise of Hong Kong calms me.
Can sound create a sense of safety? Do we unconsciously associate our experiences with a specific set of sounds? And could these associations evoke a sense of place, without us even noticing?

A sense of place is a projection of self-awareness, memory, past experiences, and daily habits onto a physical space. Sound strengthens our connection to the environment. It echoes through space like a psychological switch, triggering memory and awakening the sensing place.
What we often consider noise, flaws, or defects—the overlooked and silenced—may hold the power to evoke place.

In light of Theodor Adorno’s urgent theory of the “regression of listening,” where individuals in the information age become aurally desensitized and overwhelmed, we face a critical moment to re-evaluate the role of sound. It is time to question the architectural discipline’s longstanding approach of treating environmental sound solely as a problem of noise.
