At the river of Sanpu and Beiliao in Yujing, Tainan, along the shifting and disaster-prone Houpu River, traces of faith are scattered throughout the landscape. Descriptions of natural disasters have historically transitioned from the language of myth to that of modern science. I am intrigued by the relationship and translation between these two perspectives. Through the concept of Mazu’s (the deity’s) pilgrimage, I select nodes within the site to explore spatial interventions that juxtapose disaster prevention with everyday life. Scientific disaster mitigation is reinserted into the landscape in an attempt to create a new spiritual realm—one that connects with local life while also envisioning potential future industries rooted in this badland.
